How do you get rid of bad breath?

The issue of bad breath is common these days, about 25% people worldwide battle with it. Even though it has numerous causes the most basic cause boils down to oral hygiene. Bad breath comes with a lot of worry, embarrassment, and anxiety, however, its remedy is relatively easy. You might
have spoken to someone you wished it didn’t happen because of the bad odor oozing out. This article covers basic solutions to the “small but mighty problem”.

What is Bad Breath?


Bad breath is an unpleasant odor that comes out of the mouth of a person that is often caused by bacteria due to careless oral hygiene. It’s good to know that, anyone can suffer from it, and in fact 1 out of every 4 persons have it. So, it all depends on how you take proper care of your mouth.

What are the causes of Bad Breath?

Dry mouth: a mouth can be dry due to some factors such as diseases or when you wake up in the morning. Naturally, saliva helps clean the mouth which could help prevent bad breath. However, the opposite is also correct dry mouth equals bad breath.

Dental hygiene: brushing your teeth can help get rid of food particles left in the mouth that could result in odor when they are broken down. When the teeth are not brushed and flushed regularly, build up of materials between our teeth can occur and can lead to bad breath.

Food: when foods stuck in the teeth are broken down they cause odor. Foods such as garlic and onions can really cause bad breath.  After they undergo digestion, the broken-down products are carried into the blood then the lungs where they can result in bad breath. Eating onions and garlic is not wrong, however, rinse your mouth well after eating and make sure you consume it in moderation.

The condition of the mouth, throat, and nose: at times, small solid, bacteria covered and stone like substance can form on the tonsils behind the throat and produces odor. Inflammations in the nose can also cause halitosis or bad breath.

Diseases: certain types of cancer, liver failure can result in bad breath this is due to the mixture of that they produce.

Drugs: some medications can cause bad breath as they cause a reduction in saliva production which is responsible for cleaning the mouth. While other drugs can cause bad breath as they are broken down and releases chemicals. Taking vitamin supplement in excess can result in that.

Bad breath treatment



Oral hygiene is the best method of reducing or curing bad breath problem because for most people this is the main cause. It also reduces the possibility of contracting gum disease.
Recommendation: visit your dentist at least twice yearly for a check-up.
Basic bad breath remedies

Diet: Consume onions and garlic moderately. Also, sugary foods are associated with bad breath, don’t eat too much of it. Ensure you reduce your intake of coffee and alcohol.

Avoid dry mouth: ensure you drink plenty of water and stay away from tobacco and alcohol as they cause the mouth to dry. Chewing gum or licking sweets can initiate the production of saliva, however, take the saliva in moderation. If your mouth is chronically dry contact a doctor for medication.

Brush teeth: ensure you brush your teeth at least twice daily, for best result, do it after meals.

Brush Tongue: brush your tongue alongside your teeth as bacteria can build up pretty fast on it.

Clean Dentures: ensure you clean anything that gets into your mouth regularly this will help prevent bacteria getting into the mouth. Change your toothbrush after every 2-3 months of uses

Flossing: Ensure you floss your mouth as it reduces built-up of foods on the teeth. Brushing cleans only 60% of the teeth surface, flossing does the rest.
